Dream of flesh
Have you ever been so observant in a room full of people so much so that your brain just turns off rather than trying to comprehend the greatness of your surroundings? Probably yes. That happened to me lately, as I was finishing my work in the office I touched my neck. That was the beginning of the end of my sanity for the day.
Tun,tun, tun. I could hear my jugular's every beat resonate. First it was only in my hand, a second later it had spread everywhere, it was the only sound my ears could pick up; another second later I was exceptionally aware of every single heart in the room pumping to keep us all alive.
All of these hearts pumping around 70mL of blood into the aorta every second, blood that would reach every last bit of the body, the skin allowing it to disintegrate and regenerate continuously, the kidneys, filtering around 20% of my body's blood every minute, or my digestive system working without even me noticing on that morning breakfast.
“Hey are you coming?”
A voice, sound waves detected by my ears, turned into electric signals and sent to my brain.
The brain. 1 billion bits of information are fired towards it every second, and of all of them we are made aware by our own body of only 10! The restless prodigy of evolution. It might just be the strongest machine that has ever been created or imagined, something that is able to keep itself in check, to change the conditions around it, to comprehend the meccanisms behind its own nature and at the same time not be always conscious of it. There are approximately 15 of these wonders in this room and suddenly everyone in the room is not only a person I spend, voluntarily or not, 8 hours of my day, but a perfectly oiled machine designed by millions of years of mistakes, adaptations, evolution.
Hi, and welcome to this room!
The person who inhabits this space is quite a peculiar one who is trying to learn as much as possible about the human body, probably through quite a few mistakes.
Please excuse them and do not consider them an expert, but rather a travel companion while exploring the wonders of this thrilling subject. Their intent, as a matter of fact, is not to write a manual but a collection of articles to tickle their and possibly your marvel.
